Some trips are fun. Some trips are memorable. And then there are trips like this, the kind that make you fall in love with a city all over again.
We drove six hours to Hamburg to visit a fully dedicated gluten-free Christmas & winter market, and I can say this with my whole heart: Hamburg, you stole my heart.(And yes… I’m also coming home a few kilos heavier, absolutely no regrets.)
The event took place at Restaurant Quintessenz, and from the moment we arrived, I felt something that every coeliac knows is rare and special: total ease. No questions, no explaining, no anxiety, just food, festive vibes, and the comfort of knowing that everything was safe.
The Food (aka the dream scenario) 🤍
Let’s talk ratings, because priorities:
🥪 Pork sandwich with coleslaw — 9/10Juicy, flavourful, comforting, and exactly what you want on a cold winter’s day. This was my personal favourite and I’d happily eat it again… and again.
🥞 Crêpes — 9/10Soft, indulgent, and beautifully made. Honestly, you’d never know they were gluten-free — which is always the highest compliment.
🍷 Glühwein — 10/10Perfection. Warming, spiced just right, and pure Christmas in a cup. I refuse to elaborate further.
🧇 Waffles — 6/10Not my top pick compared to the others, but still enjoyable. When everything else is this good, even a 6/10 waffle is forgiven instantly.
More Than Food: The Community ✨
What truly made this experience unforgettable wasn’t just the food, it was the people.Everyone was so kind, welcoming, and understanding. There was a real sense of community, of shared experience, of that unspoken “we get it” that exists between people who live gluten-free.
Being surrounded by others who didn’t have to ask “Is this safe?” felt incredibly freeing. For a few magical hours, food was just food again, joyful, festive, and stress-free.
Final Thoughts 🤍
This Christmas market was, quite simply, a coeliac’s dream.Safe food, festive atmosphere, kind people, and that unmistakable feeling of belonging.
Hamburg, thank you for the memories, the warmth, the glühwein, and the extra kilos, I’ll treasure all of it.And to anyone gluten-free wondering if experiences like this exist: they do. Sometimes, they’re just six hours away.
Here’s to more gluten-free adventures, full hearts, and full stomachs ✨
